Tasmania is the smallest state of the Commonwealth of Australia. It is an archipelago of more than 300 islands which lie to the south and is separated from the rest of Australia by the waters of Bass Strait. It is geographically located between latitudes 40 degrees and 44 degrees south. It is surrounded by the Great Southern Ocean to the west and south, the Tasman Sea to the East and Bass Strait to the north.
Tasmania is a pristine place where the air masses roll in consistently from the oceanic west, bringing some of the world’s cleanest air, along with rain that is pure enough to bottle. The air in the north-west of our main island is reportedly amongst the cleanest recorded in any populated place.
Tasmania protects more of its land than any other state in Australia. Around 40% is set aside in the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, National Parks and in State and Coastal Reserves. The World heritage Area alone encompasses 800,000ha.
Tasmania is Australia’s gourmet island. It is a gourmet paradise, where people live in close harmony with the land and the sea. It has a mild temperate maritime climate, with four distinct seasons. It is an island cooled by latitude rather than altitude. Our “clean and green” environment translates into a safer and cleaner food, produced in an environmentally friendly sustainable production system.
In 1999 and 2000 Tasmania was named “Best Temperate Island in the World” by Conde Nast Traveler.
In 2006 Tasmania was named the number 1 Island Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific by US Travel + Leisure magazine at the 2006 World’s Best Awards.
In 2008 global travel giant Lonely Planet named the East Coast’s Bay of Fires region as the world’s top travel destination for 2009.
The abundance of the surrounding oceans and the soils, rivers and geography of the island provide a generous bounty. Tasmania is blessed by its isolation and enforces strict quarantine regulations to maintain its disease free environment, of which it is very proud.
On an island with so much bounty, food and wine is good cause for celebration.
